Early Morning (5:30 – 6:00 AM): Depart from your Vrindavan or Mathura hotel. Today covers three destinations spread across Braj, so an early start is not optional — it is what makes the difference between a comfortable day and a strained one.
Morning (6:30 – 8:00 AM): Arrive in Gokul, roughly 15 km south of Mathura. Gokul is where Nand Baba and Yashoda Ma raised Krishna after Vasudeva carried him across the Yamuna on the night of his birth. Visit Nand Bhavan — the house believed to be where Krishna spent his early childhood. Then walk to Brahmand Ghat on the Yamuna, where Krishna is said to have shown Yashoda the entire universe inside his mouth. Gokul is smaller and quieter than Mathura or Vrindavan, and the morning light on these lanes feels closer to what Braj must have looked like before the tourist buses arrived.
Morning (8:15 – 8:45 AM): Short stop at Raman Reti, a sandy stretch where Krishna and Balram are believed to have played as children. The ashram here is peaceful and the grounds are open.
Morning (9:00 AM): Drive from Gokul to Govardhan — approximately 35 km, taking around 45 minutes via the Mathura–Deeg road.
Morning (9:45 AM – 12:30 PM): Govardhan Parikrama. The full parikrama route around Govardhan Hill is 21 km and takes five to six hours on foot, barefoot on the stone path. For families and senior travellers, the vehicle-assisted parikrama covers the key stops without the full walk — Mukharbind Temple, Manasi Ganga, Radha Kund, Shyam Kund, Kusum Sarovar and Dan Ghati Temple. Each of these stops has its own leela tied to the Bhagavata Purana, and a guide who knows the stories makes the difference between a drive-past and an actual darshan. Note that the last stretch to some kunds involves walking on unpaved paths — wear sensible footwear.
Lunch Break (12:45 – 1:45 PM): Lunch near Govardhan town. There are several clean vegetarian dhabas on the main road. A proper break here matters — the afternoon still has Barsana ahead.
Afternoon (2:00 PM): Drive from Govardhan to Barsana — roughly 25 km, about 40 to 50 minutes. The road passes through open Braj countryside, and on a clear day you can see the Barsana hills from several kilometres out.
Afternoon (2:45 – 4:30 PM): Barsana — the birthplace of Radha Rani. The main temple, Shri Radha Rani Temple (also called Ladli Ji Temple or Shriji Temple), sits on top of the hill and requires a climb up stone steps. The climb takes 10 to 15 minutes at a steady pace. At the top, the temple offers darshan of Radha Rani and a sweeping view of the Braj plains below that makes the climb worth every step. After the hilltop temple, visit Mor Kuti and Pili Pokhar at the base of the hill. During Lathmar Holi season these grounds are unrecognisable with colour and crowds, but on a regular day Barsana is one of the most peaceful places in the entire Braj region.
Late Afternoon (4:45 PM): Begin the return drive. Barsana to Mathura is about 50 km and takes roughly an hour. Barsana to Vrindavan is slightly longer — about 55 km. If your return journey is towards Delhi via the Yamuna Expressway, the Mathura toll plaza is on the way and the expressway drive takes approximately three hours to South Delhi, traffic permitting.
Evening (6:00 – 6:30 PM): Drop at your hotel, Mathura Junction railway station, or proceed towards your onward destination. The two-day Braj yatra covers the five essential Krishna leela sites — Mathura, Vrindavan, Gokul, Govardhan and Barsana — at a pace that lets each place register properly rather than blur into a list of names on a dashboard camera.
