Varanasi — also known as Kashi, Banaras, or the City of Light — is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on Earth. At its sacred heart stands Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple, home to one of the 12 Jyotirlingas — the most sacred manifestations of Lord Shiva.
The Jyotirlinga here is called Vishwanath or Vishweshwara — the Lord of the Universe. Hindus believe that a visit to Kashi Vishwanath washes away the accumulated karma of an entire lifetime. For those who die in Varanasi, Lord Shiva himself is said to whisper the Taraka mantra in their ear — granting instant moksha, the ultimate liberation from the cycle of rebirth.
The current temple was built in 1780 by Ahilya Bai Holkar, the Maratha queen of Indore. The iconic golden dome — covered with 800 kg of pure gold donated by Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab — shines over the ancient city and can be seen from the Ganges.

Kashi Vishwanath Dham
Inaugurated 2021 · New Corridor
Unlike most temples, Kashi Vishwanath does not close in the afternoon. It remains open from 3 AM to 11 PM daily, with 5 aartis spread through the day and night.
Most sacred time of day — Lord Shiva is awakened. Extremely charged atmosphere, very limited capacity near the Jyotirlinga.
Best darshan window. Bhog Aarti at 11:30 AM follows. VIP pass holders enter through the dedicated gate. Arrive by 7 AM for shortest queue.
Midday aarti — Lord Shiva is offered the midday bhog (food offering). Temple remains open after this aarti.
Steady footfall in the afternoon. Slightly thinner crowd than morning. Dress cool for summer visits.
Evening aarti — temple complex illuminated fully. Very popular; arrives a small crowd from Dashashwamedh Ghat after the Ganga Aarti.
Lord Shiva is adorned with fresh jewellery and garments for the night. One of the most beautiful and intimate aarti ceremonies.
The final aarti of the day — Lord Shiva is prepared for rest. Temple closes after Shayan Aarti until Mangala Aarti the next morning.
Temple is closed between Shayan Aarti and Mangala Aarti. No entry during this window.
Each of the five aartis has a distinct character and spiritual significance. Understanding each one helps you choose which to attend based on your devotion and schedule.
Mangala Aarti
3:00 AM
The awakening aarti — Lord Shiva opens his eyes to the new day. This is the most spiritually charged moment at Kashi Vishwanath. The air inside the Jyotirlinga chamber vibrates with the sound of ghantis and mantras. Extremely limited capacity — VIP pass strongly recommended.
Bhog Aarti
11:30 AM
The midday bhog aarti where the Lord is offered sacred food. The ceremony is performed with full ritual protocols by the temple priests. Atmosphere is calmer and more contemplative than the morning rush.
Sandhya Aarti
7:00 PM
As dusk falls over Varanasi, the evening aarti fills the entire Kashi Vishwanath corridor with the sound of bells and conch shells. Many pilgrims combine this with the Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat just 500 metres away.
Shringar Aarti
9:00 PM
One of the most beautiful ceremonies — Lord Shiva is adorned with fresh flowers, sacred threads, and ornaments. The chamber is lit with thousands of lamps. A deeply moving and intimate darshan for those present.
Shayan Aarti
10:30 PM
The final ceremony of the day — Lord Shiva is prepared for rest. After Shayan Aarti the temple closes until 3 AM. Pilgrims who attend the full day's cycle — from Mangala to Shayan — consider it a complete and extraordinary blessing.
Go to shrikashivishwanath.in — the official Kashi Vishwanath Dham Trust website. This is the only legitimate source for online darshan and aarti booking. Avoid all third-party booking agents.
Choose between general darshan, specific aarti slot, or VIP darshan (Vishesh Puja). Select your preferred date and time window. Aarti slots have very limited capacity — book as early as possible for Mangala Aarti.
Enter your name, mobile number, and Aadhaar/Passport number. You can book for a group of up to 4 pilgrims under one registration. Each booking requires a unique ID number.
Download the booking confirmation PDF or save the SMS. Show at the Kashi Vishwanath Dham VIP gate along with original photo ID. Photography is not permitted inside the temple — plan accordingly.
Official booking portal: shrikashivishwanath.in — The only legitimate source. Mangala Aarti and Shringar Aarti slots are extremely limited and book out days in advance. For Mahashivratri, book 45 days ahead.
Men: Dhoti, dhoti-kurta, or kurta-pyjama. Shorts and half-pants are strictly not allowed inside the corridor. Traditional is mandatory, not optional.
Women: Saree, salwar-kameez with dupatta covering the head. The temple environment requires full modest coverage at all times.
Enforcement at Kashi Vishwanath is stricter than most temples. Modestly dressed pilgrims are never turned away — others may be asked to change.

Kashi Vishwanath VIP Darshan (also called Vishesh Puja or Priority Darshan) is a booked darshan service that allows pilgrims to enter the Jyotirlinga sanctum with minimal wait through a designated entry gate. It is available through the official Kashi Vishwanath Dham Trust portal at shrikashivishwanath.in. The service allows a specific darshan or aarti slot to be reserved in advance, particularly useful for the highly competitive Mangala Aarti and Shringar Aarti slots.
There are 5 main aartis at Kashi Vishwanath Temple every day: Mangala Aarti (3:00 AM), Bhog Aarti (11:30 AM), Sandhya Aarti (7:00 PM), Shringar Aarti (9:00 PM), and Shayan Aarti (10:30 PM). All five are unique in character and spiritual atmosphere. The Mangala and Shringar aartis are the most sought-after for their intimacy and power.
Kashi Vishwanath Temple is open for darshan from 4:00 AM (after Mangala Aarti) until 11:00 PM (after Shayan Aarti). The temple is closed only between 11:00 PM and 3:00 AM. Morning darshan (4 AM–11 AM) is the busiest window. The temple does not close in the afternoon unlike many other temples across India.
General darshan at Kashi Vishwanath Temple is completely free. VIP darshan (Vishesh Puja) and aarti booking may involve a nominal puja dakshina (ritual offering fee) depending on the specific service booked. Book only through shrikashivishwanath.in. Any third-party website or agent charging for 'VIP tickets' is operating illegally.
Kashi Vishwanath is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas — the most sacred manifestations of Lord Shiva across India. Kashi (Varanasi) is considered the spiritual capital of Hinduism and one of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri). It is believed that anyone who dies in Kashi automatically attains moksha (liberation) as Lord Shiva whispers the Taraka mantra in their ear. Visiting Kashi Vishwanath is considered the highest act of Shiva bhakti.
The Kashi Vishwanath Dham corridor project, inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi in December 2021, completely transformed the approach to the temple. The corridor directly connects the temple to the Ganges river banks, covering 5 lakh square feet. Hundreds of encroachments were removed, the walkway from Manikarnika Ghat to Lalita Ghat is now unobstructed, and the temple complex now has modern facilities including waiting areas, cloak rooms, and better security management. The view of the temple from the Ganges is now directly visible for the first time in centuries.
Traditional Indian attire is mandatory at Kashi Vishwanath. Men must wear dhoti-kurta or kurta-pyjama — shorts and half-pants are not permitted inside. Women must wear saree, salwar-kameez with dupatta, or any modest full-length clothing. No sleeveless tops. No jeans inside the inner sanctum area. Footwear is removed before entry and stored in the cloak rooms or bags available at the main gate.
With a VIP or booked darshan slot, the complete experience — from entry to exit — takes approximately 30–60 minutes. In the general queue on weekdays, wait times are typically 1–3 hours. On major festivals (Mahashivratri, Sawan Mondays), general queue wait can exceed 5–8 hours. The Mangala Aarti darshan is the most intimate — it lasts about 30 minutes in a much smaller crowd.
Mahashivratri is the single most important day at Kashi Vishwanath. The entire city transforms — every ghat, every lane is lit, and millions of devotees arrive for the 24-hour non-stop darshan and aarti. The atmosphere is extraordinary and unlike anything else in India. However, general queue waits exceed 8–10 hours. VIP darshan passes for Mahashivratri exhaust within minutes of release. Book 45 days in advance.
Yes — this is the most popular Varanasi evening combination. The Sandhya Aarti at Kashi Vishwanath is at 7:00 PM, and the Dashashwamedh Ghat Ganga Aarti starts around 6:45–7:00 PM. Most pilgrims attend the Ganga Aarti first (at the ghat, 300 metres away), then walk to Kashi Vishwanath for the 7 PM Sandhya Aarti, and finish with Shringar Aarti at 9 PM. This evening sequence is one of the most spiritually complete experiences in all of India.

Also Available — VIP Darshan at Other Sacred Temples
Kashi Vishwanath VIP Darshan refers to the priority or pre-booked darshan system at Shri Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga Temple in Varanasi — one of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas and the most important Shiva temple in all of Hinduism. With the opening of the Kashi Vishwanath Dham Corridor in December 2021, the entire approach to the temple was transformed, making the darshan experience more organised and accessible for millions of annual pilgrims.
The Kashi Vishwanath Dham corridor project removed hundreds of encroachments around the temple and created a direct 5-lakh-square-foot complex connecting the temple to the Ganges riverbank. For the first time in centuries, the temple spire is directly visible from the Ganges. Modern facilities — cloak rooms, multiple entry gates, rest areas, a museum, and better security management — have made the darshan experience significantly more dignified and smooth.
The 12 Jyotirlingas are the most sacred shrines of Lord Shiva, spread across India. Kashi Vishwanath in Varanasi, Somnath in Gujarat, Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain, Omkareshwar in Madhya Pradesh and Kedarnath in Uttarakhand are among the most visited. A pilgrimage that covers all 12 is considered the highest Shiva bhakti and is a lifetime goal for millions of Hindu devotees.
Varanasi, Ayodhya and Mathura–Vrindavan form the three sacred vertices of the most important Hindu pilgrimage circuit in North India — visiting the birthplace of Shiva's city (Varanasi), the birthplace of Lord Ram (Ayodhya) and the birthplace of Lord Krishna (Mathura) in one journey. Our team at Mathura Vrindavan Tour Guides can plan this complete circuit with certified guides, AC transport and VIP darshan coordination at all three destinations.
