Step by Step
Arrive at Vishram Ghat — the most sacred ghat in Mathura. Take a sacred bath in the Yamuna. Perform a formal sankalp (vow) in the presence of a Brahmin priest or your guide, stating your intention to complete the 84 Kos Braj Parikrama. This ritual transforms the journey from tourism into pilgrimage.
Always proceed in a clockwise direction with Braj Bhoomi (the sacred land) on your left. The traditional starting sequence from Mathura is: Vrindavan → Madhuvan → Talvan → Kumudvan → Bahulavan → Govardhan → Nandgaon → Barsana → Kamyavan → Gokul → Mahavan → return to Mathura.
During the entire parikrama: eat only simple sattvic food (no meat, onion, garlic), maintain brahmacharya, speak minimally or chant continuously, sleep on the ground if doing foot parikrama, do not wear footwear when entering any sacred grove or van, and always maintain an attitude of reverence.
The 12 sacred forests are the heart of the 84 Kos Parikrama. At each van, enter, sit for a few minutes, recite the associated leela story (your guide will narrate), and offer pranams to the deity. Do not rush through the vanas — they are the reason the parikrama exists.
The Govardhan Parikrama (21 km around the sacred hill) is considered one of the most important acts within the 84 Kos circuit. This inner parikrama includes Radha Kund, Shyam Kund, Kusum Sarovar, Manasi Ganga, Annakut, and Danghati. Allow one full day for Govardhan parikrama with darshan.
Return to Vishram Ghat in Mathura and perform final completion prayers. Take a sacred bath. Your guide will perform a samapti (completion) ritual. The parikrama is now complete. Many pilgrims observe the Vishram Ghat Yamuna Aarti at 6:30 PM as their final act — the most fitting close to the Braj circuit.
Niyamas
Sattvic Food Only
No meat, fish, eggs, onion, or garlic throughout the entire parikrama period. Simple dal, sabzi, roti, khichdi. Many pilgrims observe a full fast on Ekadashi days during the parikrama.
Always Clockwise
Never deviate to counter-clockwise movement. The entire 252 km circuit must be done clockwise. If you need to retrace your steps for any reason, you must complete the remaining circuit without counting the back-tracked section.
Barefoot in Sacred Vanas
Remove footwear when entering any of the 12 sacred vanas (forests). The soil of the 12 vanas is considered directly sanctified by Krishna's feet. Footwear is acceptable on the public roads between vanas.
Continuous Chanting
Traditional parikrama is performed while chanting the Holy Names — Hare Krishna Mahamantra or Radhe Radhe with each step. Even mental chanting is accepted. The parikrama is a moving meditation, not a trek.
Minimize Speaking
Speak only what is necessary during the parikrama. Excessive talking, joking, and worldly conversation reduce the spiritual benefit. Walking in silence or chanting is the ideal.
Sleep on Ground (Walking)
Traditional foot parikrama pilgrims sleep on the ground (or a simple mat) rather than on beds. This is a traditional niyama (rule) of Braj parikrama. For vehicle parikrama, this rule is relaxed for those with physical limitations.
No Cutting the Circuit
Do not take shortcuts that skip portions of the 84 kos route. The parikrama must be complete. If you are doing a vehicle parikrama, the vehicle must travel the full route — you cannot skip any of the major stops.
Start Before Sunrise
Traditional parikrama begins before sunrise at Brahma Muhurta (approximately 4:30 AM). This is considered the most spiritually potent time of day for devotional practice in the Vaishnava tradition.

Why Choose Us
Since 2004, Mathura Vrindavan Tour Guides has been the most trusted name for 84 Kos Parikrama in Braj. Our founders and senior guides have personally completed the 30-day foot parikrama multiple times — not as a tour but as a personal devotional practice. This lived experience is what makes our guidance fundamentally different from any travel agency.
We know which path leads to Kumudvan when the road forks without signage. We know the family of priests at Bahulavan who conduct the authentic Bahulastami ceremony. We know the exact step at Brahmanda Ghat where the Yamuna view is most powerful at dawn. This is not guide-book knowledge — this is 20+ years of walking, praying, and serving pilgrims in Braj.
