Janmashtami celebrates the sacred midnight of Krishna's birth with solemnity, fasting and devotional intensity. Nand Utsav is the other side of the same event — the joyful morning after, when Nanda Maharaj woke up and announced to all of Gokul: “A son has been born to me!”
According to the Bhagavata Purana, Nanda Maharaj celebrated the birth of his son (whom he believed was his own biological child — not knowing the divine identity) with extraordinary generosity. He donated cows, gold, grains and gifts to every cowherd family. The entire community of Gokul celebrated with song, dance, music and feasting.
In Braj today, this celebration is continued through Dahi Handi, community bhajans, prasad distribution and the general joyful atmosphere that marks this day — which carries the specific quality of communal celebration that distinguishes it from the more personal, intimate devotion of Janmashtami night.
Dahi Handi re-enacts the playful Krishna's habit of stealing butter and curd from village homes. A clay pot filled with curd and butter is hung high, and teams form human pyramids to break it. The celebration combines athleticism, devotion and the playful nature of Krishna's childhood.
Nand Utsav is deeply associated with curd, butter and milk — the traditional cowherd community's wealth and the objects of young Krishna's affection. Prasad on this day includes sweets made from milk and butter. The theme of dairy products connects the festival to the pastoral world of Gokul.
Janmashtami is a festival of devotional intensity and midnight vigil. Nand Utsav is the complement — a morning festival of communal joy, generosity and celebration. Together they represent the full cycle of Krishna's birth narrative: the sacred arrival and the community's response.
In Braj devotion, Nanda Maharaj represents the parental love (vatsalya) aspect of bhakti. His love for Krishna — free of the knowledge of divinity, simply the pure love of a father for his son — is considered one of the highest forms of devotion. Nand Utsav celebrates this love.
Gokul is the village where Nanda Maharaj and Yashoda lived when Krishna was born — and where the infant Krishna was brought by Vasudeva on that famous midnight crossing. Nand Bhavan — the house of Nanda Maharaj — is the most sacred spot for Nand Utsav. The celebration here is the most authentic, conducted by the hereditary priests with traditional Braj rituals. Dahi Handi (breaking the curd pot) is the centrepiece of Gokul's Nand Utsav.
Gokul is 10 km from Mathura Junction — easy taxi/auto ride. Arrive by 9 AM for the morning puja and to be in position for Dahi Handi.
The Dahi Handi ceremony at Nand Bhavan Gokul — the most traditional Nand Utsav celebration in Braj
Nandgaon is the village where Krishna grew up after infancy — the permanent home of Nanda Maharaj and Yashoda. The Nand Bhavan temple at Nandgaon sits on a hilltop and is a major pilgrimage centre. On Nand Utsav, the village celebrates with processions, Dahi Handi, bhajans and prasad distribution.
Nandgaon is 43 km from Mathura, 50 km from Vrindavan. Plan to visit Gokul + Nandgaon as a day trip on Nand Utsav for the most complete experience.

Dahi Handi — Breaking the Curd Pot
Dahi Handi (breaking the curd pot) re-enacts the young Krishna's playful habit of breaking pots of butter and curd. In Gokul and Vrindavan, this celebration is both a devotional act and a joyful community game.
Late morning
Processions Through Village
After the morning ceremony, processions move through the village streets. Nanda Maharaj is said to have distributed gifts generously to all cowherd community members when Krishna was born — this tradition of generous prasad and sweet distribution continues. Villages near Gokul and Nandgaon hold their own processions with decorated floats depicting scenes from Krishna's birth story.
Evening
Evening Bhajans and Prasadam
Nand Utsav evenings across Vrindavan and Gokul are marked by continuous bhajan programmes. The evening aarti at ISKCON, Banke Bihari and other temples includes special Nand Utsav kirtan. Generous prasad distribution is a hallmark of this festival — Nanda Maharaj was known for his generosity, and his celebration continues that tradition.

Nand Utsav (also called Nandotsav or Nand Mahotsav) is a festival celebrated on the day after Janmashtami (the birthday of Lord Krishna). It celebrates the joy of Nanda Maharaj — the foster father of Krishna — announcing the birth of his son to the entire cowherd community of Gokul and Nandgaon. According to the Bhagavata Purana, Nanda Maharaj celebrated Krishna's birth with extraordinary generosity — distributing cows, gold and gifts to the whole community.
Nand Utsav 2026 will fall on approximately 17 August 2026 — the day after Janmashtami (which is expected on ~16 August 2026). The date is determined by the lunar calendar as Bhadrapada Krishna Navami.
Janmashtami is the celebration of Krishna's actual birth — observed at midnight with great solemnity and devotional intensity, with fasting, midnight abhishek and darshan. Nand Utsav is the celebration of the community's joy — the next morning, when Nanda Maharaj announces to the village that his son has been born. While Janmashtami is more intense and solemn, Nand Utsav is more joyful and communal — it is the morning after, when the whole village celebrates together.
Dahi Handi is the tradition of hanging a clay pot (handi) filled with curd, butter and sweets at a height, and forming human pyramids to reach and break it. This re-enacts the childhood play of Krishna, who was famous for his love of butter and his habit of stealing curd pots from the village women — climbing on friends' shoulders to reach pots hung from the ceiling. Dahi Handi is celebrated on Nand Utsav as part of the joy associated with Krishna's birth and childhood.
For the most authentic and traditional Nand Utsav, Gokul — specifically Nand Bhavan — is the premier destination. Gokul is the actual village where Nanda Maharaj lived when Krishna was born, and the celebration here is conducted by hereditary priests in the traditional manner. For those who want an organised, accessible programme with international participation, ISKCON Vrindavan is excellent. The ideal plan is to visit Gokul in the morning for the Dahi Handi ceremony, then Vrindavan in the afternoon/evening.
The ideal plan: arrive in Vrindavan or Mathura the day before Janmashtami. On Janmashtami day, attend day temple darshan in Vrindavan, then the midnight Janmashtami abhishek and celebrations. The next morning, travel to Gokul for Nand Utsav Dahi Handi and morning puja, then return to Vrindavan for the afternoon/evening Nand Utsav programme. A 3-day trip covering the day before, Janmashtami, and Nand Utsav gives the full experience.
Nanda Maharaj is one of the most beloved figures in the Braj devotional tradition. He is considered the ideal of parental love — his love for Krishna represents the purest form of vatsalya bhakti (parental devotion). Nandgaon — his village — is named after him and is one of the major pilgrimage sites of the Braj region. The traditions of Barsana (Radha's village) and Nandgaon are the two 'villages' whose playful rivalry forms the basis of Lathmar Holi.
Gokul is approximately 10 km from Mathura Junction railway station. From Mathura, take an auto-rickshaw or taxi to Gokul — about 20 minutes. From Vrindavan, Gokul is about 25–30 minutes by taxi via Mathura. From Delhi, trains to Mathura Junction take about 2 hours on express trains, then taxi to Gokul. Gokul is easily accessible as a day trip from both Mathura and Vrindavan.
