Holi did not begin as a generic spring festival. It began in Braj Bhoomi — the sacred land of Radha and Krishna — as a celebration of their divine play. The stories of Krishna playing Holi with Radha and the Gopis in the forests of Vrindavan, the teasing visits to Barsana, and the colourful battles between Nandgaon and Barsana are the original Holi narratives. What the rest of India celebrates on one day, Braj celebrates for an entire fortnight.
The Lathmar Holi of Barsana is not a tourist event — it is an ancient tradition that has been performed for centuries by the same villages, in the same temple courtyards, by descendants of the same families. The women of Barsana are the Sakhis of Radha Rani. The men of Nandgaon represent Krishna and his companions. The lathis are wielded in love, not violence.
To experience Holi in Braj is to experience the origin of the festival — its full devotional, cultural and spiritual dimension — as it has been celebrated for centuries.
White is the traditional colour for Holi in Braj — it receives all other colours most vividly and represents the purity of devotion before Krishna's colours transform it. Old white kurta-pyjama or white cotton clothes are ideal.
Apply coconut oil on all exposed skin and hair before playing Holi. This creates a protective layer that prevents colour from staining skin and makes washing off much easier. This is a traditional practice in Braj — not just a tourist tip.
Traditional Holi music in Braj is called Hori — devotional songs about Radha and Krishna played during Holi. The sound of Hori sung by groups of men and women in Barsana, accompanied by dholak drums and manjira, is one of the most evocative sounds in Braj.
Holi is one of the world's most photographic events. Waterproof your phone completely. A waterproof phone case is essential. For cameras, use a UV filter and lens hood. The best Lathmar Holi shots are taken from elevated positions — our guides know exactly where these vantage points are.
Barsana is the birthplace of Radha Rani and the home of the world-famous Lathmar Holi. On this day, women of Barsana (the Gopinis) beat men from Nandgaon (the Gops) with sticks (lathis) while the men try to shield themselves with shields — re-enacting the playful legend of Krishna visiting Radha's village. The colours, energy, music and sheer spectacle make this arguably the most vivid celebration of Holi in India.
Arrive by 9 AM for a good vantage point. The Lathmar event typically begins around 11 AM. Hire a local guide — the temple complex is complex and the crowds are overwhelming without guidance.
Women chasing men with sticks while everyone throws gulal — the defining image of Braj Holi
The day after Barsana's Lathmar Holi, the celebration reverses — men of Barsana travel to Nandgaon (Krishna's village) where the women of Nandgaon now beat them with sticks in return. Both villages celebrate with equal intensity. Nandgaon's Nand Bhavan temple is the centrepiece of this celebration.
If you can only attend one Lathmar Holi, Barsana is slightly more famous. But Nandgaon is equally authentic and often slightly less crowded with tourists.

Phoolon Ki Holi (Holi with Flowers) takes place at Banke Bihari Temple a few days before the main Holi. Priests shower the gathered devotees with petals of marigold, rose and other flowers instead of coloured powder. The fragrance, the golden-yellow petals falling from above, and the sound of bhajans create an otherworldly atmosphere unique to Vrindavan.
One of the most photogenic events of Holi week — if you can only attend one early-week celebration, make it Phoolon Ki Holi at Banke Bihari.

ISKCON Krishna Balram Mandir holds an elaborate Holi celebration attended by devotees from around the world. The grounds are spacious enough to make Holi playable with colour, and the programmes include kirtan, lectures on the meaning of Holi and prasad. The organised format makes it the most accessible Holi experience for international visitors and families.
Best option for families with children and international visitors — well-organised, spacious, and the safest Holi experience in Vrindavan.

Prem Mandir holds Holi celebrations in its large gardens and its stunning marble exterior is illuminated during Holi week. The evening Holi programme at Prem Mandir, set against the illuminated temple backdrop, provides one of the most photogenic Holi experiences in Vrindavan.
Visit Prem Mandir in the evening for the illuminated Holi atmosphere — less crowded than Banke Bihari but very beautiful.

Week Before Main Holi — Temple Preparations
The week before main Holi is alive with preparation across Braj. Temples are decorated, special kirtans begin, and the atmosphere in Vrindavan starts transforming. Phoolon Ki Holi at Banke Bihari (flowers instead of colours) takes place during this week — one of the most uniquely beautiful events of the entire Holi season.
~11 March 2026
Lathmar Holi — Barsana
The most famous day of Braj Holi. Women of Barsana (Gopinis representing Radha's companions) beat men from Nandgaon (representing Krishna and his companions) with decorated sticks. Men carry shields and try to dodge — all in the spirit of playful devotion. Clouds of gulal (coloured powder) fill the air. The sound of traditional Holi songs (Hori) and the massive crowds create an electrifying atmosphere.
~12 March 2026
Lathmar Holi — Nandgaon
The celebration reverses at Nandgaon — Krishna's village. The men of Barsana now arrive and the women of Nandgaon beat them in return. Nandgaon's Nand Bhavan temple is beautifully decorated and the village celebrations are equally authentic to Barsana's, with slightly fewer tourist crowds.
~14 March 2026
Main Holi Day — Vrindavan
Main Holi in Vrindavan is an experience beyond description. Every temple plays Holi from early morning. Lanes overflow with people covered in every colour. ISKCON, Banke Bihari, Radha Raman, Prem Mandir — every sacred space joins the celebration. The meaning of Holi in Braj is devotional — it is the re-enactment of the divine play of Radha and Krishna. The colours are not mere celebration but an offering.
~18 March 2026
Rang Panchami — The Finale
Rang Panchami (the fifth day of Holi fortnight) marks the official end of Holi in Braj. Some temples — particularly in Mathura and Vrindavan — hold one final celebration with colour and kirtan on this day. A quieter, more intimate finale to the extraordinary Holi season.

Lathmar Holi 2026 is expected to take place on approximately 11 March 2026 in Barsana and 12 March 2026 in Nandgaon. The dates are determined by the lunar calendar and typically fall about 3–4 days before the main Holi (Phalgun Purnima). Phoolon Ki Holi at Banke Bihari Temple Vrindavan is usually on 10 March 2026. Main Holi is expected around 14 March 2026.
Lathmar Holi is a centuries-old tradition from the Braj region rooted in the legend of Krishna visiting Radha's village of Barsana. According to the tradition, when Krishna and his companions from Nandgaon came to tease the Gopis of Barsana, the women drove them away with sticks. This playful scene is re-enacted annually — women of Barsana (representing Radha's companions) beat men from Nandgaon with decorated lathis (sticks), while the men shield themselves and try not to dodge too obviously. It is an act of devotion — not aggression — set to the music of traditional Hori songs.
Wear old white clothes that you don't mind ruining — the colour will not wash out completely. White is traditional and considered the ideal colour for Holi as it shows the colours most vividly. Apply coconut oil generously on all exposed skin and hair before playing — this makes the colour much easier to wash off. Waterproof your phone and camera. Do not wear good clothes, leather footwear, or carry expensive bags.
Yes — with reasonable precautions, Holi in Vrindavan is safe and manageable. Barsana and Nandgaon are authentically celebratory rather than chaotic. ISKCON Vrindavan is the safest, most organised option for families and solo international visitors. The main challenges are crowd management and protecting your belongings. A local guide is strongly recommended for Lathmar Holi at Barsana — they will navigate you to safe vantage points and manage the crowd situation.
Many seasoned travellers and devotees consider the Braj region — particularly Barsana, Nandgaon and Vrindavan — the best place in India to experience Holi. The reason is context: in Braj, Holi is not just a colour festival but a devotional re-enactment of the divine play of Radha and Krishna. The traditions are ancient, the rituals are specific, the music is Hori (traditional Holi songs of Braj), and the atmosphere is one of genuine bhakti rather than mere carnival.
Phoolon Ki Holi (Holi of Flowers) is a uniquely Vrindavan tradition that takes place at Banke Bihari Temple a few days before the main Holi. Instead of coloured powder or water, priests shower the gathered devotees with petals of marigold, rose, jasmine and other flowers from the upper galleries of the temple. The fragrance, the colour of thousands of flower petals falling through the air, and the sound of bhajans make this one of the most beautiful and distinctive celebrations of the entire Holi season.
The Holi season in Braj officially lasts about 2 weeks — from Basant Panchami (which marks the beginning of Holi preparations) to Rang Panchami (5 days after main Holi). The most concentrated celebration period is the 5 days from Phoolon Ki Holi (3–4 days before main Holi) through to the main Holi day itself. Lathmar Holi at Barsana and Nandgaon takes place in the 3 days before main Holi.
From Delhi, take the Yamuna Expressway to Mathura (about 2.5 hours), then a taxi or pre-booked vehicle to Barsana (another 45–55 minutes). Total journey time is approximately 3–3.5 hours. The fastest trains from Delhi to Mathura take about 1.5–2 hours, then another hour by taxi. We strongly recommend pre-booking a vehicle from Mathura as taxis become scarce and expensive on Lathmar Holi days. Departing Delhi by 5–6 AM gets you to Barsana by 9 AM — ideal timing.
