She consoles him and — not knowing how else to comfort her child — tells him that if he wants to sit on the highest throne, he should seek the throne of the Lord. The sage Narada Muni, ever-watchful for souls ready for the spiritual path, encountered young Dhruva leaving the palace. Narada tested him — suggesting the boy was too young, too small, too hurt to pursue the Lord. Dhruva's response showed the fire within him. Narada taught him the mantra Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya and directed him to Madhuvana (ancient Mathura) on the banks of the Yamuna, where he should meditate with complete one-pointed focus.
What followed was one of the most intense meditation programmes described in the Puranas. For five months, Dhruva progressively withdrew from food, water and breath itself — eating only dried leaves, then fallen fruit, then nothing at all, until he was standing on one leg with his arms raised and withdrawing from all external awareness. The entire cosmos was disturbed; Indra and the gods became alarmed. They could not understand how a five-year-old was generating such spiritual power.
Lord Vishnu, deeply moved, appeared before Dhruva. He touched Dhruva's forehead with his divine Panchajanya conch shell — and in that instant, Dhruva's mouth opened and he sang ten perfect Sanskrit verses of exquisite prayer, each one a jewel of devotional theology. Then Vishnu granted him the Dhruva Loka — what we call the Pole Star — as an eternal abode.
